The rate
In 2026, senior embedded listings in the Netherlands run about €100–€130 an hour (Freelancer.nl). In Germany the published average for embedded systems is about €91 an hour (FRATCH, October 2026). €100 sits in that band. A short question can be a few hours. A defined firmware or edge-AI job is often closer to €6,000–10,000.
What the hours cover
- Firmware: battery life, radios, drivers, someone else’s codebase.
- Edge AI: a model that already works, running on the device.
- A first look at a sensor, a board, or a protocol, before a longer build.
A short first look is a discovery: possible solutions and a timeline, €1,500, one week. A feasibility study is the longer one, about €10,000 and at least a month. A grove, rather than a device, is consulting for farmers.
